Niklas Süle has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the season, ending his career at the age of 30.

The Germany national football team defender made the decision after suffering a knee injury during last month’s Bundesliga clash against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

Süle admitted he initially feared he had suffered a third anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury — a setback that had previously affected his career. Although scans later confirmed the injury was not an ACL tear, the experience ultimately convinced him to step away from football.

Speaking on the Spielmacher podcast on Wednesday, the defender said he became emotional after the initial diagnosis, revealing that he “went into the shower and cried for 10 minutes” because he believed the worst had happened.

Despite later receiving encouraging MRI results, Süle said he had already made up his mind to retire, explaining that he no longer wanted to risk another lengthy recovery process or major injury setback.

“In that moment, I really thought: ‘It’s torn’,” he said.

“When I went for the MRI the next day and received the good news [that it was not a cruciate ligament tear], it became 1,000% clear to me that it was over.

“I couldn’t imagine anything worse than looking forward to life afterward — being independent, going on vacation, spending time with my children — only to then face a third cruciate ligament tear,” he added.

Süle will remain with Borussia Dortmund until his contract expires on June 30 before officially retiring from the game.

During his career, the defender won five Bundesliga titles with FC Bayern Munich and was part of the squad that lifted the 2020 UEFA Champions League trophy.

On the international stage, he earned 49 caps for Germany, represented the country at two FIFA World Cups, and helped the team win the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

His retirement brings an early close to a career once regarded as one of the most promising in German football, but one that was ultimately heavily impacted by injuries and repeated rehabilitation battles.
