Godswill Akpabio on Wednesday criticised the subscription billing system of DStv in Nigeria, questioning why customers continue to lose subscription days even when the service is not being used.

Speaking during plenary, Akpabio noted that DStv subscribers in South Africa are allowed to pause their subscriptions when they travel, unlike in Nigeria where paid subscription periods continue to count down regardless of usage.

“In South Africa, if you travel for one month, two months, three months, your card will not run. Your money remains until you return and reactivate it,” he said.

“But in Nigeria, once you pay and travel for one or two weeks, by the time you return, the subscription has already expired,” he added.

The Senate President described the practice as unfair to Nigerians, particularly families who travel during holidays only to come back and discover that their subscriptions had been exhausted despite not using the service.

Drawing a comparison with electricity billing, Akpabio said Nigerians also face similar challenges with power supply, where communities continue to receive bills despite having faulty transformers and no electricity.

“The same way we pay for electricity we are not using is the same way people lose their DStv subscriptions while away on holiday. It doesn’t happen in South Africa where the company comes from,” he stated.

Akpabio further directed the Senate committee responsible for communications to invite DStv officials for questioning, insisting that Nigerians should not be charged for services they are unable to use.

“We need to invite DStv for explanations,” he said.
