Former Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has withdrawn from the 2027 Yobe State governorship race under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Baba announced his decision in a statement obtained by The media on Wednesday, explaining that the move followed wide-ranging consultations with political stakeholders and associates within and outside the state.
According to the former police chief, the withdrawal was made to preserve unity, stability and progress within the APC ahead of the party’s governorship primaries.

He said, “After extensive consultations and meetings with the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, the governors of Yobe and Borno states, elders, political associates and key stakeholders across the 17 local government areas, I have decided to step down from the race for the APC governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.”
Baba described the decision as a difficult but necessary sacrifice aimed at strengthening unity within the ruling party in Yobe State.
He appealed to his supporters to remain peaceful and continue backing the APC and its eventual governorship candidate.
The retired IGP also reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Yobe State despite exiting the contest.
His withdrawal came less than 24 hours after another APC governorship aspirant, Lawan Kolo Geidam, also stepped down from the race.
The media had earlier reported that Geidam withdrew after a meeting between members of the G-6 group of APC governorship aspirants and Vice President Shettima in Abuja over the party’s succession arrangement in Yobe State.
The remaining aspirants in the race are Senator Ibrahim Muhammed Bomai, Mustapha Yunusa Maihaja, Bashir Sheriff Machina and Kashim Musa Tumsah.
