Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), Abia State, has clarified that the Chairman of its Governing Council, Fidelis Edeh, is not acting in retaliation against the Vice Chancellor, Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, over the announcement of Governor Peter Mbah’s victory in the 2023 Enugu State governorship election.
The university has dismissed social media claims that Fidelis Edeh is obstructing several initiatives of the Vice Chancellor due to his role as Returning Officer in the election that declared Governor Peter Mbah the winner, contrary to Edeh’s purported preference.
The reports further alleged that this supposed retaliation led to the cancellation of the university’s 13th convocation, delays in staff promotions, and widespread disruption across the campus.
Reacting to the reports, the management of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike said that the institution is peaceful with all activities ongoing, and not experiencing any form of turmoil.
A statement signed by Ubadire Agua, the Chief Public Relations Officer of MOUAU, accused politicians of attempting to destroy the peace in the institution with repeated fake news.
“The university management, under the capable leadership of its 6th Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, wishes to reiterate that there is no tension or turmoil within the institution,” the statement said.
The university noted that “knowledgeable persons” in Nigeria have recognized Professor Iwe’s role as Returning Officer in the 2023 Enugu State governorship election as a national service, highlighting his courage, commitment to justice, and wisdom.
The statement also dismissed claims that staff promotions were blocked by the Chairman of the Governing Council, affirming that the promotion of qualified personnel has proceeded without delay or denial
