Troops on Monday eliminated several suspected bandits while responding to an ambush on traders along the Tarah–Karawa route in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The traders were attacked by the gunmen around 8:00 a.m. on Monday while travelling from Tarah village to the weekly market in Sabon Birni at Kwanan Akimbo.

Troops stationed in Kurawa town reportedly responded swiftly after hearing the gunshots, engaging the attackers in a gun battle that lasted for nearly an hour.

The army engaged them in a fierce battle, while the bandits later retreated and fled to their enclave across the stream.

Nine bodies of slain bandits were recovered in the area, and another four were found in the nearby bush and along the stream.

The troops also recovered several weapons and motorcycles, which were taken to Kurawa. Two civilians sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital, while all the traders were rescued without harm.

A source confirmed that there were no casualties on the side of the military.

The source further disclosed that residents of Kurawa and neighbouring communities were celebrating the success of the operation.

Aminu Boza, the Sabon Birni representative in the Sokoto State House of Assembly, confirmed the incident, stating that at least nine bodies, believed to be those of the attackers, had been recovered, while searches for others are ongoing.

He added, “Many weapons and motorcycles were recovered from them. I hope our military will maintain this momentum.”

The latest attack comes just a day after bandits struck Gatawa and Shalla villages in Sabon Birni and Isa local government areas, leaving seven people dead and abducting several women.
