The General Officer Commanding, 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Bemgba Koughna, has visited Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State to assess the security situation following renewed threats allegedly linked to the Lakurawa terrorist group.
The visit was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Nigerian Army and Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba.
Koughna inspected the Forward Operating Base in Kebbe and surrounding communities after reports of a renewed attack on Ungushi community.
The visit came amid growing security concerns along the Sokoto-Kebbi border, where residents of some affected communities have reportedly fled following attacks and incidents of livestock rustling.
During the visit, the GOC engaged community leaders and residents, listened to their concerns and assessed the security situation in the area.
He assured residents that the Nigerian Army had strengthened its security arrangements to prevent terrorist infiltration and protect vulnerable communities.
Koughna said troops remained fully deployed, alert and prepared to respond swiftly to emerging threats, adding that measures had been put in place to identify and contain security threats before they escalated.
He further assured residents that terrorist groups would not be allowed to establish safe havens in Kebbe and neighbouring communities.
The Army commander urged residents to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, assuring them that security personnel were firmly on the ground.
He also called for stronger cooperation between the military and local communities, particularly through the timely sharing of credible intelligence.
Koughna urged residents and community leaders to promptly report suspicious movements, unfamiliar persons and other activities capable of threatening security.
He stressed that effective intelligence-sharing remained crucial to preventing attacks, disrupting terrorist networks and restricting the movement of criminal elements.
The GOC reiterated the Army’s commitment to protecting lives, property and critical infrastructure in Kebbe and other vulnerable communities within the operational area.
He assured residents that troops would continue to operate with determination and professionalism to safeguard communities and prevent criminal elements from disrupting their livelihoods.
The operational assessment was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security around Kebbe and other vulnerable communities following recent security incidents in the area.
