ASUU EMBARKS ON INDEFINITE STRIKE AT TARABA UNIVERSITY

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University branch, has resumed its previously suspended indefinite strike, accusing the Taraba State Government of failing to implement the agreement reached with the union on January 17, 2025.
In a statement signed by the branch chairman, Dr. Joshua Garba Mbave, and issued to journalists on Wednesday in Jalingo, the union said the decision was prompted by what it termed the government’s failure to take “concrete and verifiable steps” toward meeting its commitments.
The statement explained that the strike had initially been suspended in good faith to give the government adequate time to address the agreed demands, but noted that no significant progress had been recorded.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Taraba State University, TSU Branch, hereby informs the general public, students, parents, and all stakeholders that it has resumed its previously suspended total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action,” the statement read.
The union explained that its congress, held on February 18, 2026, reviewed the situation and resolved that the continued neglect of longstanding issues left it with no alternative but to resume the industrial action.
ASUU listed several grievances behind the renewed strike, including the absence of a functional pension scheme for the university, failure to pay outstanding salary arrears owed to its members, non-payment of accumulated Earned Academic Allowances, EAA, and the non implementation of the newly negotiated 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement.
Dr. Mbave stated that the lingering issues have remained unresolved for a considerable time, negatively impacting staff welfare, morale, and the effective operation of the university.
He stressed that the decision to resume the strike was taken as a final measure, after prolonged engagements with the state government did not produce satisfactory outcomes.
