The Kaduna State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has expressed readiness to engage the Kaduna State Government in immediate negotiations aimed at resolving outstanding issues and preventing an industrial crisis at the institution.

The Chairman of ASUU-KASU, Dr Abubakar Abdullahi, disclosed this on Thursday at a press conference in Kaduna, saying the union was willing to meet with the government at any time to find lasting solutions to the challenges affecting the university.

Abdullahi said the union was not eager to embark on industrial action, stressing that a strike would have negative consequences for lecturers, students and the institution.

He explained that the two-week ultimatum issued by the union followed a directive from its national leadership, but expressed hope that discussions with the state government would produce concrete results before the deadline.

According to him, the major demand of the union is the implementation and domestication of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, which he said would significantly improve staff welfare and working conditions.

The chairman disclosed that the union had earlier presented 10 demands to the authorities, three of which had been resolved, while seven remained outstanding after nearly two years of engagement.

Among the unresolved issues are university autonomy, excessive workload, promotion arrears, death benefits, group life insurance, wage awards and pension remittances.

The union had recently issued a two-week ultimatum over the unresolved issues, concerns about the exit of academic staff and the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement, warning that failure to act could result in a total and indefinite strike.

Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Government has expressed its willingness to dialogue with ASUU-KASU to prevent disruption of academic activities.

The Principal Private Secretary to Governor Uba Sani, Prof Bello Ayuba, had urged the union to utilise established channels of engagement, assuring that the government was committed to resolving the outstanding issues.

Abdullahi called on the government and other stakeholders to take advantage of the renewed opportunity for dialogue, assuring that the union would negotiate in good faith.

He appealed for urgent action on the outstanding demands, saying their resolution would restore confidence among academic staff and help avert a shutdown of the university.
