The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has reportedly urged the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to terminate the contract for the Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi Road project over alleged poor performance and prolonged delays by the contractor.
According to a leaked letter signed by Senator Barau and received by the Federal Ministry of Works on June 8, 2026, the lawmaker expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of work being carried out by CGC Nigeria Limited, the firm handling the road construction project.
The Kano–Gwarzo–Dayi Road project entails the expansion of the nearly 100-kilometre single carriageway into a dual carriageway aimed at improving transportation and facilitating the movement of agricultural products from rural communities to markets within and outside the region.
In the letter obtained by DAILY POST, Barau noted that despite significant budgetary allocations for the project, progress on the road remains below expectations, resulting in continued hardship for residents, motorists and businesses that rely on the route.
He disclosed that the project was allocated N19 billion in the 2025 Appropriation Act and received an additional N37 billion in the 2026 budget, yet the level of work completed has reportedly fallen short of expectations.
The Deputy Senate President described the road as a vital infrastructure linking Kano, Katsina and Kebbi states, stressing its importance to economic growth and regional development.
He called on the Ministry of Works to immediately review the contractor’s performance and determine whether it has met the required standards.
Barau further recommended that the contract be revoked if the contractor is found incapable of delivering the project within agreed terms, maintaining that such a decision would protect the public interest and facilitate the timely completion of the road.
