ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS: NIGERIA MUST MOVE TOWARDS A PLASTIC-FREE FUTURE – UNDP/GEF

The United Nations Development Programme’s Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme has called on Nigeria to begin planning for a future with little or no reliance on plastics.
The National Coordinator of the UNDP/GEF initiative, Ibironke Olubamise, urged young Nigerians to develop innovative solutions that could help reduce and eventually eliminate dependence on plastic materials.
She also appealed to government agencies, organisations, and individuals to take deliberate steps toward phasing out plastic use across the country.
Olubamise noted that while plastics remain widely used globally, there is an urgent need to explore effective ways of managing and repurposing them in order to reduce environmental and health risks associated with waste.
Speaking at a plastic waste solutions programme held in Abuja on Wednesday, she encouraged youths to focus on upstream interventions that could prevent plastic waste at its source.
“You may also want to contemplate downstream solutions, which pertain to what we do after plastic has been produced. This is equally important, as many companies are still engaged in plastic production,” she said.
“On a global scale, plastic remains integral to nearly every facet of our lives. Therefore, I urge you to continue your efforts and strive to discover viable solutions,” she added.
Olubamise further expressed appreciation to the organisers and participants of the programme, noting the importance of continued engagement in addressing plastic pollution.
