Following his death, the Qatari government announced a four-day period of national mourning starting on Monday, during which government offices and public institutions will be closed, while national flags will be flown at half-staff.
Nigeria’s condolences were conveyed in a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.
In the statement, the Federal Government described Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, as a visionary leader whose contributions significantly shaped the country’s growth and modernisation.
The statement noted that his leadership, commitment to development and dedication to international cooperation earned him widespread respect both within the Gulf region and globally.
“His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani was an exceptional statesman whose transformative leadership played a pivotal role in Qatar’s remarkable development. His legacy of progress, wisdom and international engagement will continue to inspire future generations,” the statement said.
On behalf of the Nigerian government and people, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extended heartfelt condolences to Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Al Thani family and the people of Qatar.
The Federal Government expressed solidarity with Qatar during the period of mourning and prayed for the peaceful repose of the late former Emir, while wishing his family and the Qatari people strength, comfort and fortitude in the face of the loss.
