The Imo State Police Command has commenced orderly room trial proceedings against seven police personnel accused of extortion, unprofessional conduct and high-handedness during a joint task force operation, following public outrage over a viral video recorded last weekend.

The video, reportedly recorded discreetly by a traveller, showed operatives from a joint task force comprising personnel from different security agencies allegedly harassing and extorting passengers at Seven-and-a-Half Junction in Obowo Local Government Area of the state.

Confirming the development, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, said the disciplinary process was initiated after the personnel involved were identified by complainants, arrested and investigated.

Those facing trial include Inspector Eyo Udo of the Anti-Vice Unit; Inspector Peter Nweke of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS); Inspector Ita Asuquo of the Search and Flush Unit; Sergeant Chukwuka Ekwueme of the Anti-Vice Unit; and Police Constables Onuwa Samuel, Patchris David and Amos Sunny, all attached to the Anti-Vice Unit.

Okoye said the operatives were captured in the viral footage allegedly extorting travellers while on duty at the junction. He added that personnel from other sister security agencies implicated in the incident had been handed over to their respective authorities for appropriate disciplinary action.

“The trial follows the identification of the personnel by the complainants, leading to their arrest and investigation. Orderly room trial proceedings have therefore been initiated against the seven police personnel listed,” Okoye stated.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Aboki Danjuma, assured the public that the disciplinary process would be conducted thoroughly and transparently in strict compliance with Nigeria Police Force regulations. He also pledged that the outcome of the trial would be made public.

The command reiterated its commitment to sanitising the Force of unprofessional elements and urged members of the public to continue reporting acts of misconduct by police personnel to ensure accountability and improved policing in the state.
