The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, has cautioned police officers against indiscriminately searching the mobile phones of National Youth Service Corps members under the pretext of investigating internet fraud.

Adekimi issued the warning during a working visit to corps members participating in the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Course in Kwara State, where he also assured them of adequate security throughout their service year.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Ilorin.

According to the statement, the Commissioner was received at the NYSC Orientation Camp by the state Coordinator, Musa Kafarda, who commended the police command for its commitment to the security and welfare of corps members deployed to the state.

Addressing the corps members, Adekimi assured them that the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, would continue to take necessary measures to protect them wherever they were deployed across the state.

He urged the corps members to embrace their host communities with confidence and contribute positively to their development during their service year.

The commissioner described them as important agents of positive change and advised them to use social media responsibly while avoiding digital thuggery and other activities capable of threatening peace and public order.

He said, “You are leaders of today and possess enormous potential to contribute positively to national development.

“Make your service year meaningful, contribute positively to your host communities, use social media responsibly and stay away from digital thuggery and every other activity capable of undermining peace.”

Adekimi also stressed that corps members were entitled to dignity and respect in their interactions with police personnel.

He specifically directed officers not to conduct indiscriminate searches of corps members’ mobile phones while on the road under the guise of checking for involvement in internet fraud.

“No police officer should indiscriminately search through the mobile phones of corps members on the road under the guise of checking whether they are involved in internet fraud,” he said.

The commissioner encouraged corps members who experience inappropriate conduct by police officers or have security concerns to report through the command’s designated channels or visit the nearest police formation for assistance.

He urged the corps members to regard the police as partners throughout their service year and to provide credible information that could assist security agencies in protecting them and their host communities.

Adekimi also commended the Camp Commandant and other security personnel for maintaining a safe and conducive environment for the corps members.

He wished the corps members a productive orientation exercise and a rewarding service year, urging them to make positive contributions to the communities where they would eventually be posted across Kwara State.
