2027: CHRISTIAN GROUP URGES POLITICIANS TO AVOID ETHNIC, RELIGIOUS CAMPAIGNS

A non-denominational pressure group, Christian Conscience, has called on politicians to focus on issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning against the use of ethnic and religious sentiments.
The group said political campaigns should centre on issues affecting national development rather than promote violence, intimidation or the mobilisation of political thugs.
This was contained in a statement jointly signed by the group’s National Chairman, Yetunde Akinluyi, and National Secretary-General, Kolawole Verrals, and released by its National Publicity Secretary, Tunji Oguntuase, after its monthly meeting in Lagos on Tuesday.
The statement, which was made available to the public on Thursday, urged politicians to present clear plans for improving the lives of Nigerians, particularly in education, healthcare, employment, security and the economy.
According to the group, political actors should campaign with ideas and solutions rather than insults, noting that voters deserve to know the policies, competence and capacity of candidates seeking public office.
Christian Conscience also cautioned politicians against exploiting ethnic and religious divisions for political gain, stressing that such rhetoric could heighten tensions and threaten national unity.
It urged political leaders to compete vigorously while maintaining mutual respect and recognising that political opponents could eventually work together for national development.
The group further appealed to political parties, candidates and their supporters to reject violence, intimidation and the use of thugs during the electioneering period.
It called on Nigerians to carefully assess candidates based on their track records, policies, competence and character, rather than ethnic or religious affiliations.
Christian Conscience also urged political actors to desist from mobilising supporters to attack opponents or intimidate voters, stressing that peaceful participation was essential to credible elections and national stability.
