The Kwara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has criticised Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and the All Progressives Congress following the resignation of Senator Saliu Mustapha from the ruling party.

In a statement issued on Friday by its State Publicity Secretary, Olusegun Adewara, the PDP described Mustapha’s resignation as evidence of what it termed the growing crisis and leadership challenges within the Kwara APC.

Mustapha, a founding member of the APC and one of the key figures involved in the party’s 2013 merger, announced his resignation in a letter dated August 14 and addressed to the chairman of Gambari Ward I in Ilorin East Local Government Area.

He cited recent developments within the APC in Kwara as the reason for his decision.

Although the senator has not disclosed his next political destination, there has been speculation that he could align with the PDP.

Reacting, the opposition party claimed that Mustapha’s departure had further exposed divisions within the ruling party.

The PDP accused AbdulRazaq of failing to unite the party and retain prominent members, alleging that the governor now leads an increasingly divided APC.

Adewara said the senator’s resignation was more than an individual political move, describing it as a sign that the leadership crisis within the party had reached a critical point.

The PDP also alleged that AbdulRazaq viewed influential political figures in the state as rivals and had failed to accommodate their political growth.

The opposition party cited the recent resignation of Ambassador Kolo Jiya and other APC stakeholders from Kwara North as further evidence of declining confidence in the governor’s leadership.

It subsequently urged other APC members who were dissatisfied with the party to follow Mustapha’s example and leave.

Meanwhile, Mustapha said his resignation followed extensive consultations with stakeholders, supporters and constituents across Kwara Central.

He explained that his decision was based on his belief that politics should be driven by the interests of the people, principles and a clear sense of purpose.

The senator, however, expressed appreciation to APC leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, for the relationships and experiences he gained during his time in the party.

He also assured his constituents that his resignation would not affect his commitment to serving Kwara Central, Kwara State and Nigeria.

The development comes amid growing political realignments in Kwara ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Kwara APC said it had yet to issue an official reaction to Mustapha’s resignation, while efforts to obtain Governor AbdulRazaq’s response were unsuccessful.
