The Lagos State Police Command has announced restrictions on activities for the ongoing Egungun Masquerade Festival, limiting celebrations to designated outing points and approved venues only.

The directive, issued on August 25, 2025, is aimed at ensuring public safety, protecting lives and property, and safeguarding the rights of people of other faiths during the traditional festival.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the decision follows recent clashes between rival Egungun groups in parts of the state, as well as reports of damage to public and private property.

Under the new order, Egungun masquerades, practitioners, and their supporters are prohibited from holding public processions or street marches. Organizers are also required to notify the Commissioner of Police and apply for security clearance before any outing.

“The Command will not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law on any Egungun masquerade, adherents, or followers found disturbing public order, violating human rights, or engaging in acts likely to cause a breach of peace anywhere in Lagos State,” Hundeyin warned.

He urged festival organizers and participants to cooperate fully with the police, stressing that compliance with the laws of the land was necessary to maintain peace and order throughout the celebration period.
