The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has secured the conviction of 16 environmental offenders for illegal waste disposal and other sanitation-related offences in Lagos State.

The offenders were convicted on Monday by the Oshodi Special Offences and Mobile Court after being arraigned on charges bordering on indiscriminate waste disposal, failure to register with assigned Private Sector Participants (PSPs), and violations of the state’s environmental sanitation laws.

Each of the convicts was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, comprising one month on each of four counts related to illegal waste disposal and other environmental offences.

According to LAWMA, the offenders were arrested during coordinated enforcement operations along Gbagada Expressway, Anthony Oke, Oworonsoki and Bariga, where they were caught dumping refuse on road medians, drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.

The agency said the convictions form part of its ongoing campaign to curb indiscriminate waste disposal, improve compliance with environmental regulations and promote a cleaner and healthier Lagos.

Commenting on the development, LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the convictions as a clear demonstration of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws.

“The era of indiscriminate waste disposal without consequences is over. These convictions send a strong message that environmental laws will be enforced without fear or favour,” he said.

Gbadegesin reiterated that while LAWMA would continue to strengthen waste management infrastructure and service delivery, residents and businesses also have a legal responsibility to register with their assigned PSP operators and dispose of waste through approved channels.

He added that the agency would sustain surveillance, monitoring and enforcement operations in collaboration with relevant security and environmental agencies to deter environmental violations and maintain a cleaner Lagos.

The LAWMA boss also urged residents to support the state’s environmental sustainability drive by complying with approved waste disposal practices and reporting environmental infractions through the agency’s official communication channels.
