A Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced a 28-year-old man, Ashiru Idris, to seven years in prison without the option of a fine for advertising cannabis sativa for sale on social media.

The conviction was announced by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Media and Advocacy Officer of the Kano Strategic Command, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari.

According to the agency, Justice S.M. Shuaibu delivered the judgment on July 14, 2026, after finding Idris guilty of promoting the sale of the illegal substance online.

The NDLEA explained that Idris was arrested on April 22, 2026, after a video circulated on social media showing him openly advertising cannabis sativa for sale. His arrest followed a directive from the Kano State Commander of the agency, CN DY Lawal.

The court ordered that the seven-year prison sentence should take effect from the date of the judgment.

Reacting to the ruling, Lawal described the judgment as a significant victory in the fight against drug trafficking and a clear warning to anyone using public platforms to promote illicit drugs.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to identifying and prosecuting drug offenders, stressing that the NDLEA would continue to act swiftly on credible intelligence to curb the spread of illegal substances.

The agency also called on members of the public to support its anti-drug campaign by reporting suspected drug-related activities to the appropriate security agencies.
