Morocco have emerged as Africa’s highest-earning national team over the last two FIFA World Cup tournaments, securing a combined $58 million in prize money from their remarkable 2022 and 2026 campaigns
The Atlas Lions pocketed $31.5 million for their quarter-final appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding to the $26.5 million earned from their historic fourth-place finish at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
Morocco’s 2026 earnings included a $10 million participation fee, a $2.5 million preparation grant, and $19 million in performance-based prize money for reaching the last eight.
The feat highlights Morocco’s growing dominance on the global stage, after becoming the first African and Arab nation to reach a World Cup semi-final in 2022 and maintaining their impressive form with another deep run in 2026.
Morocco’s campaign this year ended with a 2-0 defeat to France in the quarter-final on Thursday, with Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele on target as Les Bleus eliminated the Atlas Lions by the same scoreline that ended their run in the semi-final in Qatar four years earlier.
France, who advanced to the semi-finals for a third consecutive World Cup, will face Spain in the last-four.
Among other African teams at the 2026 tournament, Egypt finished second in earnings, collecting $17.5m after reaching the Round of 16, while Senegal, Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, South Africa and Ghana each received $13.5m for their participation.
