The ECOWAS Commission headquarters in Abuja hosted the 93rd regular session of the Council of Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Thursday.

Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will lead the meeting, which will centre on important issues related to regional integration, economic policy, and governance.

Omar Touray, the president of ECOWAS, thanked President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian people for their support of the regional group in his introductory remarks.

However, he pointed out that given the ongoing difficulties facing the area, the Council’s meeting couldn’t come at a better time.

Touray further informed the Council that a critical analysis will be conducted on 30 particular agenda items pertaining to commerce, security, agriculture, and stability, among other topics.

Speaking further, the president of ECOWAS also voiced concern over the fall in community remittances over the last six years, given that member states only account for 40% of remittances.

Additionally, he praised the peaceful elections held this year in Ghana, Senegal, Liberia, and Togo, saying they highlight the significance of peaceful democracy in the area.

Touray urged ECOWAS members to renew their commitment to its ideals.
