The Lagos State Sports Commission has expressed its support for the fourth edition of the Gamr X Africa E-sports tournament, taking place in Lagos on Friday (today).
Competitors from nine African nations will vie for a total cash prize of N15 million at the event, which will be hosted at the Landmark Event Centre starting at noon.
The Director-General of the commission, Lekan Fatodu, remarked at a press conference conducted at the LSSC office on Thursday, “This occasion provides a valuable opportunity for the government to engage with the substantial market of E-sports. ”
The participating nations include Kenya, Ghana, Mozambique, Senegal, Cameroon, the Benin Republic, the Ivory Coast, South Africa, and Nigeria.
Damilola Pedro, co-founder and head of collaborations at Gamr, stated that the players will be vying for championship titles in six distinct game categories, including Street Fighter, EA FC 25, Fortnite, Mortal Kombat, PUBG, and Call of Duty Mobile.
“This year and in future iterations, we are striving to implement certain changes. Our goal is to guarantee that inclusivity is integral to our initiatives and that individuals with special abilities are incorporated into our activities,” Pedro remarked.
“We are also driving a lot of female inclusion. There is a social belief that only men play games. But fortunately, we are lucky to be part of the generation where women do what men do and do it well.”
Pedro stated that the organizers intend to transport Gamr X from one nation to another, evolving from its inception in Nigeria into a worldwide phenomenon.
She urged parents to cease disparaging their children’s passion for video games as a futile pursuit, as it has now genuinely emerged as a professional endeavor.
Fatodu mentioned that the LSSC will support the event with logistics, oversight and assessment, and talent development.
“Our (Lagos government) emphasis is not on conventional sports such as football, boxing, and table tennis.
“We recognize the necessity of creating new avenues and opportunities for individuals with athletic interests that are unfamiliar to us,” he expressed.
