Agency Report

The Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says it has intercepted a truck conveying 36 tonnes of suspected lithium ore along the Jebba Expressway in the Okolowo area of Ilorin.

The State Commandant, Abbas Nda-Mohammed, disclosed this while speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday, noting that the interception was made around 10pm on Friday during an intelligence-led operation.

He said the truck, with registration number DKA 990 XJ (Kaduna State), was found transporting the mineral substance without valid documentation.

“A truck vehicle, marked DKA 990 XJ, Kaduna State, conveying about 36 tonnes of substances suspected to be lithium ore, was intercepted by the corps,” he said.

According to him, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects could not provide mining licences, waybills or any legal documents authorising the transportation of the mineral resources.

Nda-Mohammed added that investigations are ongoing to determine the source, ownership and mining company linked to the consignment.

He confirmed that three suspects were arrested in connection with the incident during a coordinated operation by operatives of the Mines and Steel Unit under the command’s Special Patrol Team.

The commandant said the suspects would be prosecuted after the completion of investigations.

He reiterated the NSCDC’s commitment to protecting critical national assets and intensifying operations against illegal mining and other related criminal activities across Kwara State.
