The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has raised alarm over the continued detention of pupils and teachers abducted during coordinated attacks on schools in Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Ibadan by the state Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Salami Olukayode, the union said the victims’ prolonged captivity has inflicted significant emotional and psychological trauma on their families, schools, and the teaching community.
While acknowledging efforts already being made by the government and security agencies, the NUT called for more urgent and decisive measures to secure the victims’ release.

The union said concerns intensified after a video released by the abductors surfaced online, showing the kidnapped pupils and teachers in distressing conditions pleading for help.
Describing the situation as heartbreaking and unacceptable, the union said no child or teacher should be subjected to such an ordeal.
“Their continued captivity is causing immense psychological pain to their families, the school community and the entire teaching profession. We therefore urge the government and security agencies to accelerate efforts aimed at securing their safe return,” the statement said.
The NUT stressed that the situation requires a coordinated, intelligence-driven response, noting that every additional day spent in captivity increases the trauma suffered by the victims and raises concerns about their wellbeing.
It urged security agencies to strengthen surveillance, improve intelligence gathering, and deploy all available operational and diplomatic strategies to ensure the immediate rescue of those abducted.
The union also appealed to community leaders and residents to cooperate with security operatives by providing useful information that could aid rescue efforts.
Reaffirming its commitment to safe learning environments, the NUT expressed solidarity with the affected families and called for renewed determination from authorities to end the ordeal.
“We remain committed to ensuring that schools remain safe spaces for learning and development, not centres of fear and insecurity. We call for swift action, stronger commitment and unwavering resolve from all stakeholders involved,” the statement added.
