The Osun State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into a shooting incident in Osogbo that resulted in the death of a 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at about 4:00pm in the Itaolokan area of Osogbo.
According to a statement by the command, preliminary investigations revealed that the incident occurred shortly after Governor Ademola Adeleke, accompanied by his nephew, Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, paid a courtesy visit to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun, at his palace.
The police alleged that immediately after the visit, a man identified as Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged”, attempted to gain access to Davido but was resisted by members of the singer’s security team.
The command described Taoreed as an ex-convict and suspected notorious thug, alleging that he is also a member of a cult group.
The ensuing confrontation reportedly attracted other suspected gang members in the area, who allegedly blocked the palace entrance and obstructed the movement of the governor’s convoy before it eventually left the area safely.
The suspected gang members reportedly left the vicinity afterwards and, according to the police, allegedly shot Yusuf at Itaolokan.
The command said its patrol team was immediately deployed to the scene after receiving information about the shooting, where officers found Yusuf lying in a pool of blood.
He was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, for medical attention but was pronounced dead by doctors on duty.
The Commissioner of Police (Election), Osun State Command, CP Samuel Etaifo, condemned the incident and assured residents that the command would deploy all available resources to apprehend those responsible.
The police have intensified efforts to identify and arrest the fleeing suspects.
The command urged anyone with useful information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station or contact the command through its official channels.
It also appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, assuring the public that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
