The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed that suspected bandits attacked a vehicle conveying the remains of a Federal Road Safety Corps official for burial, abducted the occupants and temporarily took away the corpse before it was recovered.
The deceased, identified as Augustine Ikwue, reportedly died in Lokoja and was being transported to Otukpo, Benue State, for burial when the incident occurred along the Ochadamu–Ejule Expressway.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Salisu Oyiza, said the command had recovered the corpse, which has since been deposited at the Elemona Mortuary in Ejule.
“The Command confirms that an abduction incident occurred on July 9, 2026, along the Ochadamu–Ejule Expressway when armed hoodlums attacked a Hummer bus conveying a corpse from Lokoja towards the eastern part of the country and abducted the occupants into the bush,” she said.
Oyiza explained that police operatives, working in collaboration with the military, the Vigilante Group of Nigeria and members of the Community Policing initiative, immediately mobilised to the scene after receiving a distress report.
She said the joint security team launched bush-combing and rescue operations, leading to the recovery of the abandoned vehicle and the casket containing the corpse.
“The abandoned vehicle and casket were recovered, while the casket was evacuated to Elemona Mortuary, Ejule,” the police spokesperson stated.
According to her, security agencies have intensified efforts to rescue the abducted victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
“As of today, the joint security operation has been intensified, with operatives continuing bush-combing operations in the Ugbakpedo and Ofejiji forests, while surveillance and patrols have also been reinforced along major highways in the area,” she added.
Oyiza assured the public that efforts were ongoing to secure the release of the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“Efforts are ongoing to rescue the victims and apprehend the perpetrators. We will provide further updates as more information becomes available,” she said.
