The Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed four senior police officers over various cases of misconduct, while demoting 10 others and imposing disciplinary sanctions on 31 officers to reinforce discipline within the Nigeria Police Force.
The decisions were announced in a statement issued on Tuesday by the commission’s Head of Protocol and Public Relations, Njoku Kalu, following a plenary meeting at the PSC headquarters in Abuja.
According to the statement, the dismissed officers were found guilty of gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct and acts unbecoming of public officers.
The commission also approved the demotion of 10 senior officers, including three Superintendents of Police reduced to the rank of Deputy Superintendent, two Deputy Superintendents demoted to Assistant Superintendent, and five Assistant Superintendents reduced to the rank of Inspector.
In addition, the PSC approved the compulsory retirement of two officers in what it described as being “in the public interest.”
Other disciplinary measures included severe reprimands for 10 officers, reprimands for five others, warning letters issued to three officers and a letter of advice to one officer.
The commission, however, cleared seven officers after investigations found no evidence of misconduct against them.
Speaking on the outcome of the meeting, PSC Chairman and retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Hashimu Argungu, said the commission remained committed to enforcing discipline and professionalism across the Force.
“The current board of the PSC under my watch will not condone any form of misconduct by police officers. The commission will continue to uphold discipline in the Force and ensure that every act of misconduct attracts appropriate sanctions,” he said.
Argungu added that officers who demonstrate exemplary service and professionalism would continue to be recognised and rewarded through the commission’s established incentive system.
The PSC reiterated its commitment to promoting accountability, professionalism and public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force through strict enforcement of disciplinary standards.
