SENATE URGES PRES. TINUBU TO REVIEW STRATEGIES TO COMBAT BANDITRY
President Bola Tinubu has been requested by the Senate to examine security agency tactics and form a task committee to look into the implications of bandit negotiation.
Senator Nasiru Zangon’s motion, which addressed the urgent need to review security measures in response to bandit attacks in the North-West geopolitical zone of the nation as well as in some North Central states of Nigeria, was followed by the Senate’s adoption of this resolution on Wednesday.
In order to discourage bandit incursions, the parliamentarians also decided that the federal government should reintroduce patrol sites across the states.
A state of emergency should be imposed in areas that have turned into terror hotspots, according to some MPs, including Senator Aminu Tambuwal, after a lengthy debate on the issue, which has continuously been on the front burner in the upper house.
Other legislators, like Senator Abdul Ningi, pointed out that security authorities are unable to deal with the 5,000–10,000 bandits he claimed to be there because they are either unprepared, terrified, or incompetent.
He unequivocally recommended that, in the event that tangible outcomes are anticipated, the President assign the designated security chiefs a precise directive and deadline for dealing with the bandits.
