Three suspected kidnappers have been killed during a gun duel with operatives of the Oyo State Police Command and local hunters in Otu, Itesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State, while a 50-year-old abducted man, Mosudi Gbolagade, was rescued from captivity.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, the victim was earlier kidnapped at Okaka in the same local government area before being held in the Otu community.

The statement said the operation followed a distress call received on Monday, May 25, from local hunters who were on an expedition when they came under attack by suspected kidnappers. No casualties were recorded among the hunters during that initial encounter.

Ayanlade explained that a joint response team comprising police operatives, local hunters, and other security agencies was immediately deployed to the scene.

Upon arrival, the team engaged the suspects in a gun battle, during which the criminals were overpowered and three of them were neutralised.

The police said the operation also led to the rescue of Mr Gbolagade, who sustained gunshot injuries during the incident and is currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

In the course of the operation, security operatives recovered one AK-47 rifle without ammunition, one single-barreled gun, and a machete.

The command also recalled that it had earlier rescued four passengers abducted along the Igbeti–Kishi Road in Irepo Local Government Area in March 2026.

It further referenced previous coordinated attacks in Oriire Local Government Area, where teachers and pupils were abducted from schools, noting that efforts were ongoing to tackle kidnapping across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Olugbemiga Abimbola, commended the operatives and local hunters for their bravery and coordination, describing the operation as a significant success in the fight against violent crime.

The command reiterated its commitment to sustaining aggressive operations against criminal elements and urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
