President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to investigate leading global technology firms and Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms over allegations of anti-competitive conduct and the unauthorised use of content belonging to Nigerian media organisations.

The directive follows a joint petition submitted to the Presidency by the Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO).

In a statement released on Monday, FCCPC Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, said the probe would examine allegations against major technology companies, including Meta, Alphabet (Google’s parent company), and X, formerly Twitter, as well as selected Generative AI platforms operating in Nigeria.

According to the statement, the companies are being scrutinised over claims of anti-competitive behaviour, unlawful exploitation of news content, and other practices that may undermine fair competition in the market.

The FCCPC noted that the investigation was initiated following President Tinubu’s directive in response to concerns raised by the Nigerian Press Organisation in its petition to the Presidency.
