The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has announced the suspension of lectures and practical sessions every Wednesday to enable student-athletes adequately prepare for the 28th edition of the Nigerian Universities Games (NUGA), scheduled for November 2026.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Offiong Offiong, made this known on Thursday during a press briefing on the university’s readiness to host the sporting event for the first time since 1990.
He explained that the decision was part of strategic efforts to ensure the university performs strongly at the competition, adding that UNICAL is not only focused on hosting the games but also on achieving top results.
According to him, more than 50 public and private universities have already expressed interest in participating in the games, with over 50,000 athletes, officials, and supporters expected to converge on Calabar for the event.
Prof. Offiong noted that participating institutions will compete in 28 sporting disciplines, adding that the university has incorporated NUGA preparations into its academic schedule to allow student-athletes sufficient time for training.
“Our students have been training intensively for the competition. To demonstrate our determination to top the medals table, we have directed that no lectures or practicals should hold on Wednesdays so participating students can focus fully on training,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor also disclosed that construction work is ongoing on a modern sports complex as part of preparations for the games.
He commended the Cross River State Government for its support, describing Governor Bassey Otu as a key partner in hosting arrangements.
He further stated that the state government has pledged financial and logistical support as chief host, while the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and members of the National Assembly from Cross River State have also committed to supporting the event.
Prof. Offiong expressed confidence in UNICAL’s preparedness, assuring athletes, officials, and visitors of a well-organised and memorable competition.
“We are fully ready to welcome athletes, officials, and spectators from across Nigeria and beyond. We are committed to delivering a successful event that reflects the values of excellence, fair play, and sportsmanship associated with NUGA,” he added.
