Fresh from his victory in Saturday’s governorship election, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has attributed his overwhelming re-election success to President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, describing the outcome as a strong endorsement of the President’s policies.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate said the progress recorded in Ekiti over the past four years was largely made possible by federal reforms that increased financial resources available to states.

According to Oyebanji, the election result reflected not only the people’s approval of his administration’s performance but also their confidence in Tinubu’s leadership.

“What happened yesterday is a validation of our performance by the people of Ekiti, but it is also a vote of confidence in the President. Whatever we have achieved in the last four years, after God, the President deserves credit because he created the enabling environment and resources for us to work,” he said.

The governor noted that many of his administration’s accomplishments would not have been possible without policies that enhanced the financial capacity of sub-national governments.

He also highlighted what he described as a historic level of political unity in the state during the election.

“For the first time in Ekiti’s history, all former governors rallied behind one political party and one candidate. That has never happened before,” he said.

Oyebanji further pointed to the peaceful conduct of the campaign and election, noting that there were no reported incidents of violence throughout the more than three-month campaign period.

In a separate statement, the governor said he was deeply humbled by the mandate given to him by voters, having won all 16 local government areas and secured about 85 per cent of the total votes cast.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Oyebanji the winner of the election after he polled 319,224 votes, defeating Olumayokun Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 40,533 votes, and Dare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who received 12,872 votes.
