Alumni Rejects Renaming Of UniOsun

Read Time:2 Minute, 25 Second

The Alumni of the University of Osun State (UNIOSUN), Osogbo has rejected the recent renaming of the University by the State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola during its 4th and 5th combined convocation ceremony saying that the renaming of the University after the late Cicero of Esa-Oke and former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Late Chief Bola Ige was immaterial at this point in time.
This was contained in a press statement issued and signed by Mr. Oluwatosin ikanlu and Mr. Otunde Adebowale, the President and Secretary of the Alumni respectively, and copies made available to newsmen.
According to them, As much as the renaming of the University after former Governor of  old Oyo-State, late Bola  Ige has generated controversy in the polity where some set of people see the development as immaterial but to score cheap political popularity and bring confusion into the system, others, particularly, the  members of the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) applauded Mr. Aregbesola on the development, we as stakeholders in the University  reject in entirety, the unneeded renaming of our Alma mata at an auspicious time in the history of the school such as now when the institution grapple with development, both in terms of infrastructure and human resources.
They maintained that they rejected the renaming after late Ige because Chief Bola Ige has nothing to do with the establishment of the University aside being a political leader in the State before he died in December 2001,noting that the acronym of the UNIOSUN with the renaming of Bola Ige University(BIU) had also clashed with Benson Idahosa University(BIU).
They alleged Mr. Aregbesola of not funding the University again since the last two and half (2 ½) years  and the University management in their wisdom and help of Federal Government agency (Tetfund), was
financing the citadel of learning, insisting that the Alumni totally reject the renaming of the University at this point in time when the University was facing financial difficulty.
They added that, to embark on such project of renaming any institution at this point in time, when the economy crunch was biting every sector of the country harder, it amounts to misplacement of priority because the
project is capital intensive.
According to the leadership of the  Alumni: “Renaming of the University of Osun State, popularly called UNIOSUN, after late Cicero of Esa-Oke and former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Late Chief Bola Ige at this
point in time, is immaterial and misplacement of priority. Chief Bola Ige has nothing to do with the establishment of the University. Mr. Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola action on the development is political and confusing and also, against the wishes of the UNIOSUN concern stakeholders.
“The UNIOSUN is to bear the same acronym with Benson Idahosa University (BIU) after its renaming as Bola Ige University (BIU). As Alunmi of the UNIOSUN, we  totally reject the renaming of UNIOSUN”.
