Says LASG Will Be More Innovative in Addressing Traffic Issues

As LASPA holds inaugural Stakeholders’ Forum

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has applauded the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) for its concept of the ‘On-Street Parking Scheme’ aimed at significantly alleviating traffic congestion within the State.

Speaking during the inaugural Stakeholders’ Forum of LASPA held on Wednesday at the Lagos Marriott Hotel, Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu told major stakeholders in the transport sector to work hand-in-hand with his administration for the success of the new parking scheme.

The Governor emphasised the commitment of his administration to implementing more innovative solutions to address traffic challenges, promising further support for initiatives like the On-Street Parking Scheme.

According to him, the Stakeholders’ Forum will serve as a platform for collaboration and feedback, demonstrating the government’s dedication to engaging with the community to find sustainable solutions for urban mobility issues.

While highlighting the collaborative effort between the state government and local authorities, Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the partnership with Conference 57 and the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in regulating parking across the state.

He explained that the newly approved On-Street parking scheme aims to curb indiscriminate roadside parking and create additional parking spaces in high-traffic areas by LASPA through a concessionaire arrangement with the private sector.

Sanwo-Olu underscored the need to implement more innovative strategies outlined in the Lagos State Transport Master Plan, including the establishment of the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) in 2021.

“The theme of this forum, ‘Parking in Lagos, The Journey So Far – Assessing the Social and Economic Impact of the Industry’, aptly captures the essence of our gathering today. We are here to discuss the implementation of the Lagos State Parking Policy and other
strategies adopted to regulate parking in the state.

“We have adopted a model that ensures a win-win situation between the State and Local Governments. The On-Street parking scheme will benefit both the government and residents, promoting efficient traffic management and enhancing the overall transport experience
in Lagos”, Sanwo-Olu explained.

The Governor urged stakeholders to comply with the Lagos State Parking Policy, emphasising the administration’s zero-tolerance policy for flouting transport regulations.

He expressed confidence in the expertise of the panellists assembled for the forum, anticipating valuable insights to benefit the transportation sector in Lagos and beyond.

On her part, the General Manager of LASPA, Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu said that the launch of the On-Street parking scheme is a significant step by the agency in addressing parking challenges across Lagos State, noting the urgent need to manage parking effectively
amidst the increasing population and vehicle influx into Lagos State.

She revealed that with over 1.2 million registered vehicles and approximately 224 vehicles per kilometre of road space, the demand for parking spaces in the commercial nerve centre has intensified, impacting traffic flow and road safety.

She maintained that parking management remains an integral part of the Government’s efforts to enhance traffic management and transportation, being the cornerstone of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus agenda.

While saying that the activation of the LASPA in 2021 marked a significant milestone in the government’s commitment to addressing parking-related challenges, Adelabu assured the stakeholders that LASPA remains resolute in the pursuit of excellence, envisioning a
modern, efficient, and sustainable parking system for Lagos State.

Mrs. Adelabu, therefore, urged all stakeholders to collaborate in the effective implementation of the Lagos State Parking Policy, emphasising the importance of concerted efforts to rid Lagos of parking-induced gridlocks.
