In a bold move to combat open defecation and promote public health, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba (Dr) Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin (Ige Olakulehin I), has launched a new sanitation initiative tagged “Toilets in Agbole”, calling on family heads (Mogajis) to lead efforts in constructing toilets across traditional family compounds in Ibadanland.
The initiative, unveiled during a meeting of all Mogajis at the old Olubadan Palace, Oja Oba, is part of activities lined up to mark the monarch’s upcoming 90th birthday and first coronation anniversary in July 2025.
Speaking through Prince Folaseke Owolabi Olakulehin, the Olubadan expressed deep concern over the growing rate of open defecation in Ibadanland, noting that a clean and hygienic environment is key to the health and wellbeing of residents.
“Health is wealth. For the people of Ibadanland to live healthy lives, proper human waste disposal must be prioritized,” the monarch stated.
According to the Project Coordinator, Mr. Toye Arulogun, Ibadanland ranks highest in Oyo State for open defecation, while Oyo State stands third nationwide. The project aligns with the state government’s ambition to achieve an open defecation-free status by 2028.
Alhaji Waheed Hassan Babalola Afobaje, Chairman of the Oyo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (OYORUWASSA), emphasized the importance of personal hygiene and sanitation. He pledged technical support for the project, including the provision of materials, cost-effective construction methods, and sustainable waste solutions.
Mogaji Asimiyu Adepoju Ariori, President of the Association of Mogajis of Ibadanland, lauded the initiative and assured full cooperation from the family heads. He urged all Mogajis to treat the project as a birthday gift to the Olubadan and a legacy of progress for Ibadan.
The launch was attended by representatives from the Office of the Olubadan, Ibadan Mogajis, UNICEF, RUWASA, development partners, and the media. Full details of the Olubadan’s 90th birthday and one-year coronation anniversary celebration, scheduled for July, are expected to be released soon.
