Agency Report

A suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion claimed the lives of at least four people and injured no fewer than 21 others on Friday along the Katarko-Goniri Road in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.

Reports indicate that the victims were en route to the popular Buniyadi market when their vehicle struck the suspected explosive device.

The remains of the four deceased have been taken home for burial, while the injured are currently receiving treatment at both the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital and a specialist hospital in Damaturu.

The explosion occurred in Gotala, a community located on the edge of the Sambisa Forest — an area that has seen over 15 years of Boko Haram activity.

Eyewitnesses told reporters that vigilante and military vehicles had also triggered the buried IED a day earlier, on Thursday, resulting in several casualties.

As of the time of this report, the military has not released an official statement.

Meanwhile, relatives of the victims have urged the Yobe State Government to urgently reconstruct the deteriorating road, warning that the continued threat from insurgents poses a serious risk to both local communities and the military base in Goniri.
