Substitute Paulinho netted a dramatic extra-time winner as Palmeiras edged fellow Brazilian side Botafogo 1-0 on Saturday, securing their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals.
The tense, all-Brazilian clash at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia saw few clear chances, but Paulinho—introduced in the second half in place of rising star Estevão Willian—delivered the decisive moment.
His 100th-minute strike, following a clever pass from Colombian midfielder Richard Rios, gave Palmeiras the breakthrough.
Cutting inside from the right flank, Paulinho calmly slotted a low shot into the far corner, igniting celebrations among the Palmeiras-heavy crowd of 33,657.
The win sets up a last-eight showdown next Friday in Philadelphia against either Chelsea or Benfica, who face off later on Saturday in Charlotte.
Despite captain Gustavo Gómez receiving a second yellow card in the 116th minute, Palmeiras held firm to book their spot in the quarter-finals.
The result continues their impressive run in international competition, having won the Copa Libertadores in 2020 and 2021.
Palmeiras had looked the more threatening side for much of the game, creating the majority of scoring opportunities.
Rios nearly opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time with a powerful effort that deflected onto the roof of the net.
All eyes were on 18-year-old Estevão Willian, who is set to join Chelsea after the tournament and is widely regarded as one of Brazil’s brightest talents.
Although he struggled to make a major impact in the first half, Estevão forced a sharp save from goalkeeper John Victor after the break and had a goal ruled out for offside shortly before being substituted in the 63rd minute—a move initially met with surprise but later hailed as a tactical masterstroke.
Palmeiras pressed on as Mauricio saw a header tipped over the bar, and Paulinho missed a good chance in regulation time before eventually finding the net in extra time. Fittingly, he was subbed off shortly after scoring.
Botafogo, who claimed both the 2023 Brazilian league title and their first Copa Libertadores crown in 2024, had impressed in the group stage, including a shock win over European champions Paris Saint-Germain.
However, their depleted squad—following the departure of key players and their coach—struggled to match Palmeiras’ energy and creativity in Saturday’s clash.
They mounted a late push for an equaliser, but the sending-off of Gómez did little to shift momentum as Palmeiras closed out the win and advanced.
