MOBILE USERS TO FACE TEMPORARY DISRUPTION AS ALTON SUSPENDS SIM-RELATED SERVICES NATIONWIDE
By Aishat Momoh. O.
The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has announced a temporary suspension of SIM-related services across all mobile networks in the country.
In a statement jointly signed by ALTON Chairman, Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, and Publicity Secretary, Mr. Damian Udeh, on Tuesday, the association said the disruption stems from a directive issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to migrate to a new identity verification platform.
According to Adebayo, the transition to the new platform has triggered unexpected technical issues that have affected the smooth delivery of SIM-related services nationwide.
“The new platform is designed to enhance the integrity and efficiency of Nigeria’s identity management system,” the statement read. “However, the migration has temporarily hindered mobile network operators from delivering seamless SIM services.”
As a result, subscribers will be unable to access services such as SIM swaps, SIM replacements, new SIM activations, and other related transactions during this period.
ALTON assured that it is actively collaborating with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), NIMC, and other relevant authorities to resolve the integration challenges as quickly as possible.
“We regret the inconvenience caused and advise subscribers to postpone all SIM-related requests until further notice,” Adebayo said.
He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to maintaining secure and high-quality telecom services and promised that timely updates will be provided as the situation develops.
