A horrifying case of matricide has rocked the Dantanoma quarters in Gumel Local Government Area of Jigawa State, where a 30-year-old man, Hussaini Abubakar, brutally killed his 75-year-old mother, Dahara Mu’azu.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, June 29, 2025, around 8:00 p.m., and was confirmed in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Command, SP Shi’isu Adam, on Tuesday in Dutse, the state capital.
According to the police, operatives of the Gumel Divisional Headquarters responded to a distress call and arrived at the scene to discover that Abubakar had repeatedly struck his mother’s head with mud blocks, leaving her with severe injuries. She was found in a pool of blood and rushed to Gumel General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by a medical doctor on June 30.
The suspect was immediately arrested and is now in custody, cooperating with police investigators. The authorities have promised to arraign him upon the conclusion of their investigation.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmad Abdullahi, described the act as “inhuman, barbaric, and utterly reprehensible.” He has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), to take over the case and ensure swift and thorough prosecution.
In a broader call to action, the police command urged the public to report early warning signs of mental health struggles or domestic violence to the nearest police station or community leaders to avert similar tragedies.
“The police urge the public to support their efforts in maintaining peace and security in the state,” said SP Adam, reaffirming the command’s dedication to upholding law and order and safeguarding lives.
The heinous act has left residents of the community in deep shock.
One neighbour, Sule Baba, told reporters: “I am appalled by the brutality and senseless killing of the 75-year-old woman by her own son. We demand justice for the victim and her family.”
Similarly, community member Aminu Lawan described the killing as a wake-up call for local leaders and security agencies to invest more in addressing mental health challenges and domestic conflicts.
“This is not just about one family—it’s a call for everyone to be more vigilant and proactive,” Lawan said.
As investigations continue, the community awaits justice while grappling with the emotional aftermath of a crime that has shaken Dantanoma to its core.
