President Bola Tinubu will on Thursday, July 17, 2025, preside over a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the development on Wednesday via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, noting that the expanded FEC session will hold at 5:00 p.m. at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to Onanuga, the session will be attended by the leadership of the National Assembly, members of the Judiciary, and representatives of the late former President’s family.
“As part of the Special Mourning Activities approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, an expanded Special Session of the Federal Executive Council in honour of the late former President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, is scheduled to take place tomorrow, Thursday,” Onanuga stated.
The session will follow the third-day prayer for the late leader, which will be held in Daura, Katsina State. Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead a federal government delegation of ministers to attend the prayers.
The planned FEC session comes days after the regular Monday council meeting was postponed to allow President Tinubu and his cabinet to attend Buhari’s funeral in Daura.
Buhari, who ruled as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later served two terms as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, died on Sunday in London and was buried in his hometown on Tuesday.
President Tinubu, in tribute, announced a seven-day period of national mourning, during which all flags are to fly at half-mast nationwide. He also pledged that the late leader would be accorded full state honours.
