AMY OKONKWO: THE MVP POWERHOUSE OF D’TIGRESS
BY OWOLABI OLUWADARA
Few players lit up the 2023 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket quite like Amy Okonkwo. The 6-foot-2 forward was a dominant force for D’Tigress, earning the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for her all-around excellence throughout the tournament.
Okonkwo’s breakout performance came as no surprise to those who have followed her journey. A product of Texas Christian University (TCU) in the United States, she honed her skills in one of the world’s toughest collegiate leagues before embarking on a professional career across Europe. That international experience was on full display in Kigali, Rwanda, where she led Nigeria in points, rebounds, and leadership.
Her versatility is what makes her special. She can stretch the floor with her three-point shooting, bang inside with physical post moves, and lock down opponents on defense. In the final against Senegal, she delivered a clinic scoring efficiently, rebounding with authority, and setting the tone.
Off the court, Okonkwo exudes quiet confidence. She’s not the loudest voice in the locker room, but when the game is on the line, she’s often the one to take responsibility.
“I just wanted to give everything for the team,” she said modestly after lifting the MVP trophy. “It’s not just me it’s all of us working together.”
Amy Okonkwo is the perfect symbol of the new generation of Nigerian talent: global in exposure, bold in execution, and proudly African in spirit.
