NiMET PREDICTS ABOVE-NORMAL RAINFALL, FLOOD RISK IN NORTHERN NIGERIA

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast above-normal rainfall in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, and seven other northern states in the coming days, as the country nears the peak of the rainy season.
This projection is part of NiMet’s August weather outlook, shared on Tuesday in Gombe by the agency’s Meteorological Manager for the state, Gayus Musa.
According to the forecast, other states likely to experience heavy rainfall include Sokoto, Zamfara, Jigawa, Katsina, Yobe, Borno, and Kebbi. NiMet indicated that August is expected to bring more frequent and intense downpours, especially in far northern areas.
Given the outlook, NiMet warned of a potential rise in soil moisture and river levels, which could significantly increase the risk of both flash and riverine flooding.
The agency urged residents in flood-prone and riverine areas to stay vigilant, adhere to local evacuation directives when issued, and store important documents and valuables in waterproof containers.
Emergency management agencies were also advised to use NiMet’s regular updates to educate and prepare at-risk communities for possible evacuations or other flood mitigation efforts.
Additionally, the agency encouraged community leaders to activate local flood response strategies and promote awareness about flood safety, hygiene, and health precautions.
NiMet also noted that temperatures in August are expected to remain relatively cool, particularly at night and in the early morning, which could impact vulnerable groups.
“The public is advised to dress infants and young children warmly and boost immunity through proper nutrition, especially increased vitamin C intake, to reduce the risk of seasonal illnesses.
NiMet also forecast that parts of Taraba, southern Adamawa, and the Federal Capital Territory were predicted to experience slightly below-normal rainfall.
It also said that the Southwest was predicted to experience a brief dry spell in early August, with gradual recovery of rainfall expected later in the month. (NAN)
