IGP EGBETOKUN UPGRADES POLICE LEGAL SECTION TO DIRECTORATE, APPOINTS PIONEER DIRECTOR

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the elevation of the Nigeria Police Force Legal Section to a full Directorate of Legal Services, as part of ongoing reforms to strengthen institutional capacity and enhance operational efficiency.
The new Directorate will serve as the apex legal arm of the Force, overseeing legal training, policy reviews, and engagements with prosecutorial bodies, the judiciary, and other justice sector stakeholders.

Announcing the development in Abuja on Tuesday, the IGP named Assistant Inspector-General of Police Ohiozoba O. Ehiede, psc (+), as the pioneer Director of Legal Services. Ehiede is expected to leverage his vast experience and leadership record to drive the Directorate’s mandate.
The Police Chief noted that the upgrade aligns with global law enforcement standards and is aimed at boosting prosecutorial success rates, ensuring professionalism, and enhancing public confidence in police operations.
He urged officers, particularly police legal practitioners, to support the new Directorate in advancing justice delivery and strengthening the Force’s legal framework.
