The Imo State Administration, represented by the Chief Press Secretary and Media Consultant to the Governor, Mr. Oguwike Nwachuku, has defended its recent resolution to elevate the minimum wage for civil servants to N104,000.

During an appearance on Channels TV’s The Morning Brief on Thursday, Nwachuku reassured the public and the workforce that the revised wage is not a populist initiative but rather a sustainable adjustment, supported by considerable enhancements in the state’s fiscal position.

The pronouncement by Governor Hope Uzodimma on Tuesday elicited a blend of enthusiasm and skepticism, with numerous individuals questioning the state’s capability to uphold the elevated wage level in comparison to other states.

Nevertheless, Nwachuku utilized the national platform to directly address these apprehensions, highlighting a substantial increase in the state’s Internally Generated Revenue as the key catalyst. “The administration of Hope Uzodimma has focused on fostering a digital economy and establishing a new developmental framework. When this administration assumed office, the IGR was less than N400 million; however, we are now discussing an IGR of approximately N3 billion to N4 billion. This clearly indicates that the government is progressing effectively in terms of financial management. ”

“This revenue growth is a direct outcome of the administration’s initiatives to eliminate financial leakages, digitize governmental operations, and cultivate a favorable environment for both domestic and international investments,” Nwachuku articulated during the interview. The Chief Press Secretary also underscored the government’s tangible projects in infrastructure, such as the development of 46 roads across the state, as evidence of its fiscal responsibility and long-term developmental objectives.

He emphasized that the wage enhancement was a deliberate choice made after thorough evaluation of the state’s financial capabilities and was not a politically motivated strategy in anticipation of elections.

In response to inquiries regarding the timing of the wage payments, Nwachuku clarified that “the new wage structure will be enacted with the salaries for August 2025, while consequential adjustments for other categories of civil service personnel will be applied in subsequent months. ”
