The Nigeria Police Force has reported the apprehension of 5,936 criminal suspects and the seizure of 360 unlawful firearms along with 5,953 rounds of live ammunition during countrywide operations in August.

The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Muyiwa Adejobi, made this announcement on Wednesday at the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) headquarters in Guzape, Abuja. He indicated that the arrests were conducted by operatives from the IRT and various special units as part of enhanced efforts to address gun trafficking and the spread of illegal weapons.

According to Adejobi, the apprehended individuals include 715 suspects of armed robbery, 306 kidnappers, 533 homicide suspects, 149 individuals charged with unlawful possession of firearms, 371 suspects of sexual offenses, 590 alleged cult members, and 3,272 others implicated in assorted criminal activities.

He highlighted several significant incidents, including the capture of one Jane Anodua in Rivers State for her purported involvement in child trafficking, as reported by the Plateau State Ministry of Women Affairs. Her arrest reportedly facilitated the rescue of four children, two of whom had been trafficked from Plateau to Imo State.

Another significant development occurred on July 13, with the arrest of a suspected gunrunner, Tanfa Binbol, who was allegedly operating between Taraba and Plateau States. A search of his premises allegedly resulted in the recovery of three AK-47 rifles, five handguns, and a pump-action shotgun.

Similarly, on July 27, police operatives apprehended Jerauji Ibrahim in Adamawa State, recovering two AK-47 rifles, two magazines, and 19 rounds of live ammunition. Additional operations also led to the recovery of more firearms and ammunition from criminal hideouts.

Adejobi emphasized that these operations illustrate the dedication of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, to the protection of lives and property.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that Nigerians can conduct their daily activities in safety and without apprehension,” he stated.
