Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has cautioned against religious profiling amid the renewed Boko Haram assaults, emphasizing that the extremist group does not distinguish between faiths.

The legislator conveyed this warning in a statement on Wednesday, following the recent attacks on Ngoshe village in Gwoza Local Government Area and Mussa community in Askira-Uba Local Government Area, both situated in Borno State.

It is noteworthy that over the weekend, a resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in Borno State led to eight fatalities, with five farmers slain in Ngoshe, Gwoza LGA, and three youths killed in Mussa, Askira-Uba LGA, where residences and businesses were also set ablaze.

Ndume denounced the violence as “heart-wrenching and profoundly distressing,” acknowledging the sacrifices made by the troops involved in Operation Hadin Kai.

He committed to advocating for enhanced security measures, which would encompass increased personnel, superior weaponry, and improved intelligence to safeguard rural communities. Ndume urged residents to remain alert and collaborate with security forces to avert further assaults.

In two distinct occurrences, the insurgents murdered five farmers, who were Muslims, last Saturday in Ngoshe village. Simultaneously, three Christians became victims of the terror group on Sunday in Mussa village, Askira-Uba Local Government Area.

Additionally, the assailants were reported to have destroyed numerous homes during the onslaughts. Ndume, a former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, expressed his discontent regarding an online media report that falsely asserted that all the victims were Christians.

He indicated that it is unethical and unconscionable for any media outlet to perpetuate such a narrative, cautioning that it serves no beneficial purpose.

He stated, “The forces behind these senseless killings are indifferent to faith and ethnicity. We should refrain from this perilous profiling, which may sidetrack us. It invariably inflicts more harm.

“It may even incite negative sentiments in our soldiers, undermining the morale of those who labor tirelessly, determined to eradicate this treacherous sect.

“Our people, whose sole aim is peace and a means of livelihood, continue to succumb to the brutality of insurgents. These individuals deserved to live, to cultivate, and to aspire, yet their lives are being prematurely extinguished by those who flourish on violence and havoc. ”

While applauding the military for their ongoing efforts against the insurgents, the senator reiterated his appeal to the Federal Government to prioritize the welfare of the troops and ensure the provision of adequate arms and ammunition, enabling them to decisively defeat Boko Haram.
