In a correspondence dated September 7, the agency charged the human rights advocate with uttering unlawful and derogatory comments regarding the President in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on August 26.

The Department of State Services (DSS) cautioned that noncompliance by Sowore with its demands would compel it to “pursue all legal avenues” to safeguard national security and public order. Sowore, a past presidential contender for the African Action Congress (AAC) and a pro-democracy campaigner, had in the post labeled President Tinubu as a “criminal,” alleging that he deceived Nigerians after the President reportedly asserted that corruption no longer prevailed under his administration.

The agency, through its Director of Legal Services, Uwem Davies, indicated that the comments have ignited outrage among the populace and could “instigate public unrest, division, and even rebellion. ”
