At least nine people were rescued and five others revived after a fire outbreak on Tuesday at Afriland Tower, a multi-storey commercial building on Broad Street, Lagos Island.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident in a statement on its official X handle, noting that several occupants managed to escape unhurt.
According to the agency, “a total of nine victims have been rescued. Five individuals have been successfully resuscitated. Several others escaped unhurt while efforts are ongoing to resuscitate the remaining four individuals.”
Preliminary findings revealed that the fire originated from the building’s basement inverter room before spreading thick smoke across multiple floors. The blaze, which began after a distress call was received at about 1:38 p.m., triggered panic and an immediate evacuation of occupants.
Videos shared on social media captured the chaos, with residents and passersby assisting in evacuations before emergency responders arrived.
The Fire and Rescue Service reported that its operatives later contained the fire and continued with search-and-rescue and medical operations at the site.
