The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, on Tuesday celebrated the 20th anniversary of his coronation, commemorating the milestone with the installation of new chiefs.
The celebrations included the conferment of the title of Ogboye of Egbaland on Chief Samuel Oluwadairo.
Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, who was coronated as the 10th Alake of Abeokuta and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland on November 19, 2005, presided over the colourful event. According to a statement shared with media on Wednesday, the ceremony attracted a large gathering of Egba Obas, titled chiefs, government officials, politicians, and business leaders from within and beyond Egbaland.
Oluwadairo was described as “notable among the title recipients” and was formally installed as the Ogboye of Egbaland—a prestigious chieftaincy title recognized by the state government. The palace noted that the Ogboye sits with the Alake-in-Council to help govern the entire Egba Kingdom.
His wife, Chief Regina Oluwadairo, was also installed as the new Erelu-Ogboye of Egbaland.
During the ceremony, the Alake prayed for divine wisdom and guidance for the newly installed chiefs, asking that they excel in fulfilling their statutory duties as members of the Alake-in-Council.
He further “advised them to maintain good conduct and lead by example.”
In his acceptance speech, the newly installed chief expressed deep gratitude, saying he was “truly thankful to the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III, for his fatherly counsel and for deeming me worthy of such a prestigious title.”
He emphasized that the Ogboye title “is not merely ceremonial but carries significant responsibilities and obligations.”
“I feel deeply honoured, privileged, and excited to be installed as the new Ogboye of Egbaland. This is a call to serve, and by the grace of God, I am committed to meeting the expectations of our revered Oba Michael Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo III, Shokenu IV, as well as the people of Abeokuta and Egbaland. I will work to promote peace and unity and initiate empowerment projects that foster economic prosperity for our community,” he stated.
He also prayed for the monarch, wishing him “many more years of peaceful reign marked by progress, unity, and rapid socioeconomic development for Abeokuta and Egbaland.”
The newly installed Erelu-Ogboye, Chief Regina Oluwadairo, expressed her joy at receiving the title, pledging to support her husband while combining her new role with her former title of Seriki Iya-Abiye of Egbaland to continue making a positive impact on the lives of children in the community.
