COURT RECOGNISES NENADI USMAN AS LABOUR PARTY LEADER, SACKS ABURE

The Federal High Court in Abuja has recognised Senator Nenadi Usman as the valid leader of the Labour Party (LP), effectively removing Julius Abure as the party’s national chairman.
In a judgment delivered by Justice Peter Lifu, the court relied on the April 4, 2025, decision of the Supreme Court to affirm the legality of the Usman-led National Caretaker Committee of the party.
Justice Lifu ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately recognise Senator Usman and her caretaker committee as the only legitimate authority to represent the Labour Party, pending the conduct of a national convention.
The ruling followed a suit instituted by Senator Usman, in which Julius Abure and the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) were listed as defendants.
In his judgment, the court held that evidence before it clearly showed that Abure’s tenure as national chairman of the Labour Party had expired. Justice Lifu dismissed Abure’s argument that the matter was an internal party affair beyond judicial intervention, ruling instead that the establishment of a caretaker committee was “a necessity” arising from the Supreme Court’s verdict.
The court stressed that the apex court’s April 4, 2025 judgment had already settled the issue of leadership by declaring that Abure’s tenure had elapsed, thereby justifying the formation of a caretaker committee to manage the party’s affairs.
The ruling comes days after the Labour Party’s National Working Committee (NWC), on January 9, announced its recognition of Senator Usman as the party’s national leader. The party said the decision was in line with the Supreme Court judgment and aimed at restoring constitutional order within the party.
“The NWC reaffirmed that all congresses and the National Convention of the Party shall hold accordingly, in strict compliance with the provisions of the Party Constitution. Members at all levels are therefore encouraged to actively participate in the congress processes,” the party stated.
The judgment is expected to reshape the leadership structure of the Labour Party and bring clarity to its internal governance ahead of future congresses and elections.
