A suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at the Bayelsa State Secretariat Complex in Yenagoa in the early hours of Wednesday.

The explosion, which occurred at approximately 6:00 a.m., triggered an immediate security response, with operatives swiftly securing the area to avert further risk. Access to and from the complex was temporarily restricted while comprehensive safety assessments were carried out.

The Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed that the incident resulted in no casualties and caused no structural damage within the premises.

In a statement issued shortly after the explosion, the Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah, announced the prompt deployment of security personnel to the scene.

“The Bayelsa State Police Command wishes to inform the general public of a suspected IED explosion which occurred today, 11th February 2026, at about 0600hrs within the State Secretariat Complex,” he said.

He further disclosed that the area was immediately cordoned off and that during a detailed search, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operatives discovered and safely neutralized one unexploded IED.

“No lives were lost and no property was destroyed. One suspect, Pentecost Elijah, a 60-year-old male from Otuan Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was arrested at the scene in connection with the incident,” the statement added.

“The situation has been brought under control and normalcy fully restored. Members of the public are encouraged to remain calm and proceed with their lawful activities without fear.”

The directive, issued by the Head of Service, Dr. Wisdom Ebiye Sawyer, affected more than 6,000 civil servants, who were advised to stay away from the complex pending the completion of security checks.

Security agencies, including the anti-bomb unit, established roadblocks along major access routes leading to the State Secretariat and Government House.

In addition, surveillance teams conducted thorough searches of nearby buildings to eliminate the possibility of further threats.

Authorities subsequently declared the area secure, allowing for the gradual resumption of normal operations following the security clearance.
